As an expert Trial Consulting professional, Erik has managed highly complex trials in courts throughout the country. He has consulted on a wide range of cases including multi-party business disputes, patent litigation, construction defect, and regulatory matters, each time bringing both the technology, stamina, and trial mode expertise his clients need to win their cases.
Erik specializes in complex case management, electronic database builds, war-room construction, and courtroom design requirements for A/V, hardware, and software needs. With over 20 years’ experience, Erik creates an organized environment for a trial team to perform, using his experience and background as a trial paralegal to anticipate their needs. He works with attorneys, court staff, and opposing counsel to bring thoughtful solutions to the courtroom that help juries and judges, better understand highly complex issues.
Erik has worked in every aspect of litigation support from the early stages of data collection through trial presentation in court and at arbitration. He has been instrumental in managing cases involving large databases of documents, exhibits, and testimony. Erik’s thorough approach allows him to quickly wrap his arms around a case, its documents, and relevant issues. When called upon, Erik provides quality input and cogent analysis that attorneys have frequently incorporated into everything from voire dire to their trial presentations with highly positive results.
Erik has consulted on more than 500 cases in state and federal jurisdictions throughout the country. His clients include DLA Piper, Wiley Rein, Gordon Rees, Thorsnes Bartolotta & McGuire, and corporate clients including Carl Zeiss, Hertz Rent-A-Car, DJO Pharmaceuticals, Nuvasive, and Pacific Bell Telephone Company. As a career highlight, Erik was the lead paralegal on a regulatory matter involving $2B in exposure to the client. The number documents involved in the case, when stacked, were higher than the Transamerica building in downtown San Francisco, California. The client successfully defended the case.
Prior to founding Litivate (formerly Thorsnes Litigation Services) in 2006, Erik spent 12 years in leading San Diego law firms working on some of the most complex litigation cases in the region. Erik worked on the Foodmaker matter which involved over 600 days of videotaped depositions. During this case Erik beta tested the original version of Trial Director, which is now the standard for professional trial presentation software.
Erik is frequently asked to speak on issues of trial technology and best practices for paralegals involved in litigation.
Away from Litivate, Erik enjoys his family including 4 children, his two dogs Harley and Bentley, San Diego sports teams, and his passion for all things racing, but especially Formula 1 competition.
